TEMPEST Filter Manufacturing Services

Custom Tempest Filters

At Captor Corporation, we have extensive experience in the design and manufacture of standard and custom electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters. One of our core offerings is TEMPEST filters, which are available as standard or high-performance solutions. They feature a compact design that does not sacrifice performance or isolation capacities.

Custom TEMPEST Filters

Captor Corps’ custom TEMPEST filter fabrication services can custom design and manufacture tempest filters in compact, space saving configurations to meet the most demanding requirements. Providing all services, from design to manufacture and can handle production runs from prototype to large scale orders. Termination interfaces available include threaded, solder, connectors, wire leads, or wire harnesses. Our custom tempest filters can have a voltage rating of 120/230 VAC @60 Hz, current rating of 0 to 50 A, and an operating temperature of -55 to +71 °C. If higher voltages or current are required for your application, we can manufacture a unit that will meet your specific requirement. Being an ISO 9001:2008 certified company, with experience in meeting many military standards, ensures that we can produce the highest quality products available. Compared to our competitors, we can accommodate higher operating frequencies, higher voltage and current ratings, custom chassis and termination designs, and/or unique testing requirements at a competitive price.

What Are TEMPEST Filters?

TEMPEST—i.e., transient electromagnetic pulse emanation standard—filters are designed to eliminate the conduction of electromagnetic interference in electrical and electronic equipment. In doing so, they protect sensitive data—such as banking data, client information, or intellectual property—from being intercepted by unauthorized parties.

The United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) classify TEMPEST filters into the following classification based on protection requirements:

  • NATO SDIP-27 Level A& USA NSTISSAM Level I: for devices where attackers are assumed to have direct access (<1-meter distance)
  • NATO SDIP-27 Level B & USA NSTISSAM Level II: for devices where attackers cannot get closer than approximately 20 meters (or with surrounding building materials providing an equivalent attenuation level to the distance)
  • NATO SDIP-27 Level C & USA NSTISSAM Level III: for devices where attackers cannot get closer than approximately 100 meters (or with surrounding building materials providing an equivalent attenuation level to the distance)

Other relevant standards include NATO SDIP-20, which defines installation requirements, and AMSG 799B, which defines attenuation measurement procedures.

Why Use TEMPEST Filters in Military and Defense Applications?

In the military and defense industries, TEMPEST filters are often employed to protect highly sensitive and confidential information. This information can include personnel medical data, operational tactics and strategies, and correspondence between diplomats.
