Custom Manufactured HEMP/EMP Filters
Captor Corporation, the expert in electromagnetic interference filters, offers custom HEMP/EMP filters, that target power, signal and tempest interference. We perform the design, engineering, layout, manufacturing and assembly as well as the testing, verification, consulting, prototyping and research and development. We provide assembly of components, connectors, and termination configurations while offering options such as HEMP protection modules, certified PCI data and custom tailoring.
Captor can provide existing designs for power lines, audio-data lines and control-signal lines for AC/DC power, telephone, analog fire alarms, servo motors and synchro transmitters. Ratings are 0 to 480 volts and 0 to 100 amps although higher currents are possible. Utilizing non-nutritive materials, our HEMP/EMP filters can be stored from -55 to +105 °C and are operational from -40 to +71 °C, up to 15,000 feet above sea level and in humidity ranging from 10 to 90%.
Captor can handle quick-turn prototypes up to large-scale production runs with lead times of two to three weeks on stock orders and 10 to 12 weeks for custom orders. For more information on our custom manufactured HEMP/EMP filters please see the chart below or contact us directly.
What Is a HEMP Filter?
High-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) filters protect electrical infrastructure and equipment from electromagnetic pulses from high atmosphere nuclear blasts, geomagnetic storms, solar flares, and other natural phenomena. They are vital to homeland security and national defense, preventing damage to communications and electrical equipment in the civil and military sectors.
HEMP can damage any equipment, systems, or infrastructure containing electronic components without adequate shielding, resulting in disabled equipment or permanent damage. HEMP filters from Captor Corporation can be standard or custom-made and protect communication lines and infrastructure from the dangers resulting from a natural or nuclear device-generated HEMP.
HEMP Filters From Captor Corporation
Captor Corporation manufactures various HEMP filters and NEMA cabinets. These include:
Control/Signal Line HEMP Filters – Standard Performance
. Our standard HEMP filters come with a voltage rating of 48 VDC and 120 VAC between 0 and 60 Hz. They comply with paragraph 4.6.1 of MIL-PRF-15733 for visual and mechanical inspection standards, and their capacitance meets method 305 of MIL-STD-202 at 1 kHz. Their insulation resistance complies with paragraph 4.6.7 of MIL-PRF-15733 with HEMP protection module removed, and their dielectric withstanding voltage complies with MIL-PRF-15733 with Hemp protection module removed. They also meet MIL-STD-220 requirements for standard insertion loss for 20 dB at 10 kHz and 80 dB at 10 MHz to 10 GHz.
Control/Signal Line HEMP Filters – High Performance
. Our high-performance HEMP filters come with a voltage rating of 48 VDC and 120 VAC between 0 and 60 Hz. They comply with paragraph 4.6.1 of MIL-PRF-15733 for visual and mechanical inspection standards, and their capacitance meets method 305 of MIL-STD-202 at 1 kHz. Their insulation resistance complies with paragraph 4.6.7 of MIL-PRF-15733 with HEMP protection module removed, and their dielectric withstanding voltage complies with MIL-PRF-15733, paragraph 4.6.5 with HEMP protection module removed. They also meet MIL-STD-220 requirements for high-performance insertion loss for 100 dB at 14 kHz to 10 GHz.
NEMA Cabinets for Multiple HEMP Filters
. In addition to our filters, our stainless steel modified NEMA Type 1 enclosures provide shielding from more than 100 dB to 10 GHz on the protected side. We supply screw type or push pin terminal blocks, and we can provide the cabinet alone or the cabinet with pre-installed filter inserts to meet your specifications.

Dangers of HEMP
An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a burst of energy caused by natural or human-made means. It creates various electrical and magnetic energy fields that can cause permanent or temporary damage to electrical equipment and systems. Nuclear devices and similar natural phenomena produce an EMP that occurs in the higher atmosphere called a HEMP.
Various internal and external conditions can influence a HEMP’s impact on electrical equipment and systems. The nuclear device’s gamma yield output, energy yield, and altitude of detonation are crucial factors, along with the device’s interactions with Earth’s magnetic fields. The shielding on the target equipment, systems, or infrastructure is also a factor in the HEMP’s impact. The U.S. power grid is an example of critical infrastructure under constant risk of an EMP from natural sources and otherwise.
