Filtering Range

The effective range for filtering with standard discrete component interference filters starts at just several kilohertz and increases to tens of megahertz. The necessary radio frequency interference (RFI) filtering range also starts at a few kilohertz but tops out at one or more gigahertz. Your typical bypass capacitor won’t be able to effectively achieve RFI filtration as it starts becoming less effective at anywhere from 10 to 50 MHz.

Resistance, Inductance, Capacitance, and Impedance

Standard capacitors have series equivalent resistance and inductance. The equivalent inductance and capacitance create a series resonant frequency, at which the capacitor impedance reaches its minimum levels. When noise frequency rises, the capacitor experiences a net inductive reactance that goes up in tandem with any additional frequency increases. Bypassing to ground in this case is increasingly ineffective. Acting as a coupling path, inter-lead parasitic capacitance decreases the filtering effect. Also, standard capacitors aren’t the appropriate choice for filtration as they typically result in high impedance, which negatively impacts filtering circuits’ functionality. Often, this occurs as shunt inductance.

Feedthru capacitors, however, offer exceptional high-frequency EMI filtering and input/output coupling prevention. This is due to the capacitors’ isolation mountings as well as their minimal bypass impedance and parasitic inductance. Also, they won’t introduce inductance in the filter’s shunt branch like standard varieties. Instead, inductance presents itself in their series branch.
