EMI Filters for the Aerospace/Aviation Industry

High-frequency electromagnetic radiation is generated by nearly all electronic devices. As it radiates outward, this electromagnetic interference, or EMI, creates “noise” that has a negative impact on signal transmission and system performance in nearby equipment. In aerospace and aviation settings, EMI can interfere with navigation, communications, sensors, computer-controlled mechanical systems, and other critical equipment.

To mitigate the risk of EMI disrupting systems, Captor Corporation provides a range of EMI filter solutions that block interference and the problems it can cause. These filters meet commercial aircraft industry and military specifications, including RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-461 for design, materials, and performance.

Types of Aerospace/Aviation EMI Filters

Captor Corporation carries a range of EMI filter designs to meet specific aviation and aerospace needs. Our selection of products includes:

  • DC EMI Filters. These filters work with 0 to 400 VDC voltage and 1 to 25 amperes. Suitable operating temperatures range from -55ºC to 71ºC, with an insulation resistance of 1500 MΩ minimum, per MIL-STD-202, Method 302.
  • Single-Phase AC EMI Filters. Our single-phase AC EMI filters work with 120/250 VAC systems with 1 to 25 amperes. They operate at 50/60 Hz and 400 Hz, and function with the same insulation resistance and operating temperatures as our DC EMI filters.
  • Three-Phase AC EMI Filters. These are suitable for 120/208 VAC systems and 1 to 25 amperes, and at roughly the same frequencies as our single-phase AC EMI filters.
  • HEMP/EMP Filters
  • TEMPEST EMI Filters. Mission-critical, secure systems may benefit from using these high-isolation filters, which provide 100 dB insertion loss ranging between 14 kHz and 10 GHz. These systems are also able to prevent damage from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attacks.
  • Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) Mounted EMI Filters. CCA mounted filters are especially compact to comply with the MIL-STD-461 standard, which is required for use in environments with tight board space constraints.
  • Cylindrical Style Filters. These are general-purpose filters, which offer high performance for use in potentially harsh environments.

Applications for Aerospace/Aviation EMI Filters

EMI filters are used in a range of applications and settings to protect signal integrity and ensure complete data transfer so that equipment functions properly. The following are some common applications for EMI filters in the aviation and aerospace industry:

  • Power Systems. EMI protection ensures uninterrupted power for aircraft systems.
  • Avionics and Navigation Systems. Flight control and navigation systems require complete and accurate signal transmission for accuracy and to ensure safety.
  • Communication Systems and Radar Equipment. EMI filters block interference that might otherwise compromise radar and communications systems.
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Drones. Onboard electronics use EMI filters for object and collision detection, communications, navigation, and more.
  • Missile and Weapons Control Systems. Defense applications use EMI filters to keep sensors, controls, and guidance systems operational.
  • Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Aircraft. Emerging aviation technologies incorporate EMI filters to safeguard electronic takeoff and landing systems.
  • Ground Support Equipment and Portable Military Units. EMI filters keep different types of equipment safe from the potential effects of EMI in a range of on-ground and aerial environments.
